Strobist info: SB-800 (M 1/2) through a shoot through 43" white satin umbrella at camera left. SB-600 (M 1/8) Camera right reflected off ceiling for small amount of fill. Flashes triggered via Nikon CLS/AWS.

I had taken the week of for the kids spring break. We stayed with Tony and Krista Andersen. One day when we were all at Keith and Debbi Thomasson's place, Debbi asked me to photograph all her daughters. It was a good opportunity since it can be hard to get everyone together at once.

I ran back to Tony's place to get my umbrella and flash setup. We positioned in the TV room. A quilt was hung up behind them. I took off my 85mm f/1.4 lens and put on my 50mm f/1.8 lens so I could get everyone in the frame. I set my exposure first for f/8 to try and achieve a deep depth of field focus. I then set my shutter speed to maximum flash synch speed of 1/200 sec. I turned my ISO down to 200 so that the end result was a completely black frame so that ambient light did not contribute to the photo. I then added the flashes to the photo and adjust power output to my desired level.

After a few photos, we decided on this closer crop view. Some manipulation in Photoshop was needed for levels. I also edited out the background quilt and did some small facial retouching. Color balancing as well was carried out.

For a spur of the moment photo, I like the result. I haven't asked any of the sisters yet what they think ... hopefully they will like it too!
