Minnesota Lightning Storms

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 20 sec (20) [+]
* Aperture: f/3.5 [+]
* Focal Length: 18 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 400 [+]

Huge lightning storm last night lit up the sky. One bolt struck about 300 yards from our home and hit the neighbors tree. It lit it on fire for a few seconds! I missed the busiest part of it, but I shot a few of the trailing edge of the storm as it moved over our house and to the North. I used 20 - 30 second exposures to capture the lightning. This group of bolts must have been a few miles away. The ones that hit close left a brand of white tracks across my eyeballs for minutes on end!

Carl and a Bass

Carl and a Bass, originally uploaded by Carl's Photography.

In June, Doug and I went fishing on a private lake that has always been a consistent producer. We launched in a little john boat with a trolling motor. Here I am with my favorite spinnerbait (which I ended up losing) with white/blue coloring and a blue/purple trailer loaded with a nice largemouth bass on.

Brent and a Bass

Brent and a Bass, originally uploaded by Carl's Photography.

Brent, Doug and I went fishing on a pond with a lot of vegetation. This made it difficult to present a lure to the fish and not get hung up on weeds. Here is a nice one that was caught with Brent posing with it.

Ripe Tomatoes from my garden

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200) [+]
* Aperture: f/8 [+]
* Focal Length: 200 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 250 [+]

Strobist Info: SB-800 @ M 1/4 into 43" umbrella with black backing camera right at 3 o'clock. SB-600 @ M 1/8 into 43" umbrella white satin without black backing camera left at 2 o'clock. White posterboard directly in front to provide a hint of fill on the front face. Strobes triggered with Nikon CLS/AWS with IR pass through filter in front.

We've been picking a bunch of tomatoes every day. This represents some common ones that we have been picking. A moderate orange red one, a large yellow, and a jumbo pink red. For size reference, jumbo one is larger than a soft ball by about half again as much.

Brent

Brent, originally uploaded by Carl's Photography.

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200) [+]
* Aperture: f/8 [+]
* Focal Length: 85 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 160 [+]

Strobist info: I decided I wanted to shoot at f/8 and started there. I set shutter to max sync of 1/200s. I started at ISO 100 and increased part way through to 160 to fine tune exposure. SB-800 at M 1/4 at camera right into 43" white satin umbrella with black backing for reflective mode. SB-600 with 'pringles can snoot' at 8' ceiling height and aimed at his head from behind. SB-600 at M 1/8. Both triggered via Nikon CLS/AWS with pop up commander with IR pass through filter in front.

Brent recently lost a tooth and it is just starting to come in upfront. He is genuinely smiling because Becky walked in through the door and made a smart comment. :-)

Mist Coated and Pollen Laden

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160) [+]
* Aperture: f/8 [+]
* Focal Length: 200 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 400 [+]

With the morning sunlight lighting the mist coated plants, it was a perfect opportunity to walk around and capture scenes like this.

Morning View of the Garden

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200) [+]
* Aperture: f/8 [+]
* Focal Length: 18 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 400 [+]

Shot at f/8 with circular polarizer. Sun was to my left. Garden in view. The wide angle view doesn't show quite how big the garden is. Natalie's tent is to the right by Angel's doghouse.

A Rainbow Not Expected

A Rainbow Not Expected, originally uploaded by Carl's Photography.

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160) [+]
* Aperture: f/10 [+]
* Focal Length: 26 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 400 [+]

It was one of those recent mornings with a heavy mist / fog in the air. We had had rain the day before and the ground was moist. The night temperature had reach into the mid 50's and as the sun rose, the air was saturated with a heavy white mist. It was cool to the face and made it seem you were viewing the world through foggy goggles. I didn't get out to photograph right away and so in this photo, much of the fog has dissipated. With the sun directly behind me, I had a 270 degree rainbow pretty much wherever I looked. At times it wasn't very visible. With the use of a circular polarizer I could emphasize the sky and make the rainbow show up.

Evening on a Mississippi Sand Dune Island

SB-800 Flash on Camera on TTL.

Dad and Mom, Carrie and Jon, and my family had an outing Sabbath afternoon. We packed sandwiches, chips, cucumbers, cookies and pop. We first went directly to the lock and dam after we launched the boat. All the worst fears about the lock and dam were *not* realized as people quickly realized it wasn't a scary affair to go through. We then traveled up river to a very large sand dune island. We swam for awhile (the kids, Mom and I) while Carrie, Jon, Becky and Dad stayed and talked on the boat. Then we hiked up the steep sand dune and walked to the upriver side.

In this photograph, (front row - Brent and Danielle, 2nd row - Natalie, Carrie, Mary, Becky, 3rd Row - Jon, Frank and Carl) the west/southwest is to our backs.

Edward and Katherine in the Receiving Line

Edward and Katherine after the wedding are greeting the guests. I have more to post later that will show above this when I get time.

My family

My family, originally uploaded by Carl's Photography.

I had my umbrellas set up for some photos while we had time. I handed my camera to Ana and asked her to shoot us.

Getting ready to give each other bites of cake

She was having fun with the cake. The photo that I will post a bit later shows the reason why and what she was thinking of.

Katherine and her Father

During formal portraits by their hired photographer, I shot this one of Katherine and her Father.

The moment the kids wait for to go 'ooohhh' or 'uck'

My children had their eyes fixed on this (even thought they like to go ugh!)

Katherine and her Father processional

Walking down the aisle. It was very dark under the overhang and so I had to pump up the flash quite a bit to light them up.

Candid of Edward and Katherine during formal photos

The hired photographer was taking the formals. Here is a candid I took while they posed.
